Shapes

On the last day of August, 2018 we made a video on shapes and what we know about them and we had to pick a buddy. My buddy for this video was Chloe. Hope you enjoy the video.

The Plastic Mountain

In room five we are learning to describe a moment in time. This week we were doing writing about plastic mountain. We were also using our senses including smells, sights, sounds, feelings and sensations. Here is my writing about the plastic mountain. Hope you enjoy it.

                                 The Plastic Mountain

I’m drowning in an ocean of dirty, broken and really sharp edged plastic bottles. My feet and clothes are getting muddy from working every day under a bridge peeling the labels off plastic bottles that people have thrown away. These bottles making an annoying crackling noise.

If I don’t get this work done I might not eat tonight. We're selling all the green bottles to a scrap dealer for only $100 a month, At least it's something to buy food with. I’m determined to get all the plastic bottles sorted by the end of the day.

It’s terrifying to see all this plastic, and more is flooding the space under the bridge each day. The plastic is endless. if we took a day off it would probably be up to my shoulders, and who knows how tall it will be if we took a week off.

The smells of traffic fumes and the sugary smells in the plastic bottles are awful. And I smell them every day of the week. And don’t get me started on the sounds. People are shouting and cars are roaring.

My younger brother is moaning to me “can we go home yet? Can we eat?”

“No, we can't. We haven’t finished yet” I replied.

Were both hungry, but I don’t want to annoy mum.

“Ssh!” mum yelled at us. “Be quiet.”

The scrap dealer is here now and we can finally go home and eat our diner. We are so hungry that we don’t have time to get changed. Then we got changed after we have finished eating.

By the next day there’s more plastic than ever and that means more and more labels to peel off. I wish we were in a world with no plastic. I know this is how we get food but isn't there any other way? Why do we have to have this job? People should stop making plastic. Why did people start making plastic in the first place. Lets stop making plastic, starting now!

Jenny Sommervell at Awahono School

On Tuesday, 28 of August Jenny Sommervell came to our school. She told us about her books and read to us The Day Dad Blew Up the Cowshed and The Eel Hunt. She also told us that her books are based on true stories from her family and her sister was the illustrator for all her books. My favorite book by her is The Day Dad Blew Up the Cowshed because I think it's quite a personal story. She said writing takes a lot of time and work.

The Plastic Toyshop

In room five we had to describe what we saw in this picture of a toyshop using present tense and our senses including smells, sights, sounds, feelings, and sensations. Here is the writing I've done about the plastic toyshop.

                                 The Plastic Toyshop

                                           By Rawiri

I walk into a toy shop that’s stuffed with a variety of plastic toys and items including the chairs and water cooler and I start feeling a little dizzy because of all the bright vivid colours. The toy shop is packed with toys that are bright fluorescent colours that lash out at me and sparkle.

I am  just about to faint as I walk down the aisles full from top to bottom with luminous yellow plastic ducks, guns that are spread all across the wall,  velvety brown giant gorillas and Mario, Spiderman and a Smurf all on brightly coloured motorbikes that are rubber band powered.

The flooded store looks like an ocean of neon plastic toys. It is the largest wholesale market I had ever seen in my entire life. I can't believe my eyes. There is nothing but plastic flooding my eyes.

I can’t concentrate with the sound of the clicking keyboard from the shop owner typing on her computer. There is also the sound of people walking in and out of the shop and someone that I think is the shop owners daughter twirling on the spinning chair.

It makes feel so angry to think what will happen to all this plastic when people buy it and just throw it away without caring. This plastic going into the ocean has to stop. So let's stop now!

Line Symmetry

In room five we have been doing symmetry by folding square pieces of paper in half and cutting out half shapes to make different shapes. The shapes we had to make were four shapes with three sides, four shapes with four sides and four shapes with more than four sides. Lines of symmetry are lines that split something in to even shapes, for example if a square is cut in half and the two halves are even then its symmetry.
